Two new MOSFETs are being hailed as the smallest control and synchronous chipset for existing- and next-generation VRM10.x high-current (105A) synchronous buck converters. The IRF6608 control MOSFET boasts 8.5 milliohms typical on-resistance (RDS(on)), while the IRF6618 synchronous MOSFET features 1.7 milliohms typical RDS(on). Housed in a package that is 50% smaller than the standard SO-8, the IRF6608 is the first of the company’s HEXFET MOSFETs to use its new double-side-cooled, surface-mount, 4.8 mm x 3.8 mm DirectFET "S" package. The device’s profile is 0.7 mm, compared to 1.75 mm for SO-8. The IRF6618 is housed in the larger, 6.3 mm x 4.9 mm DirectFET package. The new chipset enables designers to make a very low profile power converter (0.98") for 1U rack-sized server systems that meet VRM 10.x specifications. The chipset is also suitable for buck converters in servers and point-of-load converters in telecomm and datacomm systems.
