Low-Power Codec Integrates PLL And Audio Amplifiers

The AK4534 is a single-chip codec that combines key features for portable applications. The low-power device's integrated capabilities include a 16-bit monaural analog-to-digital converter (ADC), a stereo digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a phase-locked loop (PLL), and headphone and speaker amplifiers. The AK4534's DAC and ADC support 16-bit sampling rates from 8 to 48 kHz. The built-in ADC, automatic level control (ALC), and microphone amplifiers optimize recording for voice recognition and audio memo applications.

The stereo DAC and digital attenuator work with the built-in headphone and speaker amplifiers for audio playback. While the headphone amplifier delivers up to 15 mW into 8- to 32-Ω loads, the mono speaker amplifier delivers up to 150 mW. The AK4534 features dual mono and stereo analog inputs for mixing a variety of external analog signals from cell-phone controllers, MP3 decoders, and external sources. The built-in PLL functions for internal audio clock generation. The codec requires a single 2.4- to 3.6-V power supply. All functional blocks of the chip can be powered down independently, enabling circuit and system designers to take an active role in power management.

The AK4534 is available in a 48-pin LQFP package or a small, leadless 52-pin QFN package. The part costs $8.21 in 1000-unit quantities.
