CB Process Yields Power-Efficient High-Speed Op Amps

Leveraging its VIP10 sixth-generation dielectrically isolated complementary bipolar (CB) process, National Semiconductor has launched a new line of power-efficient high-speed op-amp ICs. Designed for xDSL, set-top boxes, cable modems, and other communications applications, the LMH-66xx series delivers a good bandwidth-to-power ratio, high output-drive current, and low power consumption.

Each member addresses a specific market. The LMH6672 dual high-speed amplifier suits xDSL line drivers. The LMH6654 and -55 are crafted for xDSL receivers. Likewise, the LMH6642 and -43 are tweaked for products like cable set-top boxes and image scanners. The LMH6645, -46, and -47 are designed for use in GPS receivers, DVD players, and portable information appliances.

Offering a bandwidth-to-power ratio of 150 MHz/5.5 mA and a very low distortion rate of −84 dBc, the LMH6672 provides an output current of ±320 mA and a slew rate of 150 V/µs. The LMH6654 and -55 achieve a ratio of 240 MHz/4.5 mA with an output drive of 110 mA and a noise performance of 4.5 nV/√Hz. Their slew rate is 200 V/µs.

Similarly, the LMH6642 and -43 offer a bandwidth of 130 MHz with an output current of ±90 mA using only 2.4 mA of supply current from a single 3- to 10-V supply. The high-speed LMH6645, -46, and -47 draw only 650 µA of supply current to deliver a −3-dB bandwidth of 80 MHz and a slew rate of 24 V/µs. Also, the LMH6647 features zero power in the shutdown mode.

Of the eight devices, five are in production now. The LMH6645, -46, and -47 are slated for release in the third quarter. In quantities of 1000, prices start at $0.79 each. National's second wave of LMH series ICs, targeting optical storage and video applications, will be unwrapped in the fourth quarter.
