Measuring relative-target motion using optical navigation technology, the PI400TS CMOS imaging chip acquires sequential images and mathematically interprets X-Y direction and displacement magnitude. Sensor tracking resolution is 400 counts per inch at rates up to 14 in./s. Functions include image acquisition, digital-signal processing, and quadrature output conversion. The device operates on 5V with a maximum power consumption of 13 mA. Other features include an integrated aperture and oscillator, power-down mode, automatic LED control, and an imaging distance of 2.5 mm from the target surface to the lens. Available in a 16-pin plastic DIP, price is $2 each in production volumes and $10 each in prototype quantities. PERIPHERAL IMAGING CORP., San Jose, CA. (408) 428-0123.
