Described as a low-cost sensor for controlling backlighting in mobile phones, PDAs, and other portables, the APDS-9008 photo sensor approximates the spectral response curve of the human eye. It is an analog-output ambient light photo sensor in a lead-free, miniature chipLED surface-mount package and offers a wide operating voltage range from 1.6V to a maximum of 5.5V. Providing a pin-compatible alternative to the APDS-9005, the APDS-9008 features a low sensitivity variation across a variety of light sources, an operating temperature range from -40°C to +85°C, output linearity across a wide illumination range, and a high output saturation voltage. Pricing starts at $0.60 each/2,500. AVAGO TECHNOLOGIES, San Jose, CA. (800) 235-0312.
