Measuring 1 mm x 1 mm x 0.6 mm in a four-bump UCSP, the MAX9938 debuts as the industry's smallest high-side, current-sense amplifier. Via a proprietary BiCMOS process technology, the device also lays claim to achieving the industry's lowest quiescent-current consumption and highest accuracy. Operating from a 1.6V to 28V input-voltage range, it is suitable for use in smart phones, digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players, notebook computers, and other battery-operated products. Additionally, the amplifier integrates precision resistors, thereby eliminating the usual two to three external gain-setting resistors. Other features include a maximum input-offset voltage ±0.5 mV, a maximum 0.5% gain error for a total error of less than 1%, and a maximum supply current of 1 ?A. Prices start at $0.64 each/1,000.
