The STA381BW and STA381BWS Sound Terminal digital-audio SoCs from STMicroelectronics will enable smaller designs while running cooler in home entertainment applications like flat-panel televisions.

Geneva, Switzerland: The STA381BW and STA381BWS Sound Terminal digital-audio systems-on-a-chip (SoCs) from STMicroelectronics will enable smaller designs while running cooler in home entertainment applications like flat-panel televisions (see the figure).

The SoCs reduce printed-circuit board (PCB) area by consolidating a headphone driver, line-driver output, and digital-to-analogue converter (DAC). These functions typically require three additional ICs. The integrated DAC provides an extra analogue output that can be connected to the headphone input or to an external circuit, using the company’s F3X technology to simplify external filtering.

The headphone driver and industry-standard 2-V p-p line out, which require no dc blocking capacitors, also save external components and maximize reductions in PCB size and manufacturing costs.

STMicroelectronics says the devices deliver best-in-class thermal performance through a combination of high energy efficiency, proprietary ternary pulse-width modulation (PWM), and enhanced package design. The STA381BW and STA381BWS can deliver up to 15 W of output power (24 V, 8 Ω load) as well, maintaining the IC’s temperature at 55.4°C.
