100G 28-Gbps TIA Drives High Performance In Optical Networking

Sept. 23, 2014
4-channel 100G TIA serves parallel optical interconnects in applications with data rates to 28 Gbps, such as optical line cards, point-to-point microwave backhauls and video over fiber.

The ONET2804T transimpedance amplifier (TIA), designed by TI for the 100G optical networking market brings high levels of sensitivity with negligible cross-talk penalty and low input-referred noise to provide stable and robust communication in hot-pluggable transceivers. The four-channel 100G TIA serves parallel optical interconnects in applications with data rates to 28 Gbps, such as optical line cards, point-to-point microwave backhauls and video over fiber. The device is used in conjunction with a 750 µm pitch photodiode array to convert an optical signal into a differential output voltage. An internal circuit provides the photodiode reverse bias voltage and senses the average photocurrent supplied to each photodiode. Using a two-wire I2C interface, designers can optimize their systems to drive high performance at low power consumption. The 750 µm channel pitch enables designers to wire bond directly to a photodiode, reducing system complexity. Other features include 10 kΩ differential transimpedance, 21 GHz bandwidth, programmable output voltage, and adjustable gain and bandwidth. The ONET2804T four-channel 100G TIA is available in a 750 µm channel-pitch bare die with a suggested retail price of $45 each/1,000.
