Waterproof Connectors Suit Underwater Applications

Nov. 10, 2014
The new JWPS Series wire-to-board, wire-to-wire connectors, recently introduced by JST Corporation, Waukegan, Illinois, offers engineers design flexibility with its small form factor solution for a waterproof IP67 rated product that is ideal for extreme moisture or submersion applications.

The JWPS Series wire-to-board, wire-to-wire connector from JST Corp. offer engineers design flexibility with its small form factor solution for a waterproof IP67 rated product that is ideal for extreme moisture or submersion applications. Major uses include automotive, appliance, photovoltaic, underwater cameras, and other related consumer  and commercial devices. Their unique construction includes a seal ring that protects from moisture, dirt, scratches, and cracks by completely sealing at the mating side that is contained in the header or tab housing depending on which series is being used. In addition, a solid rubber seal is used for wire side sealing that makes the size compact. All seals are pre-assembled eliminating the need for additional handling on the manufacturing floor. The unique contact locking feature is internal to the housing thereby eliminating contact back out and damage through handling external locking lances. The contact system has a double spring construction that ensures superior contact force. To facilitate proper mating, connectors offer keying and color coding. In addition to the keying and color coding, the receptacle housing features a positive, squeeze to release locking system to prevent accidental unmating.

From 2 to 4 circuits on a 2.0 mm (.079 in.) pitch (contact to contact) and 4.0 mm (0.158 in.) pitch row to row spacing for double row versions are offered. The overall size when mated is just 30.2 mm (1.189 in.) for the wire-to-wire and just 21.0 mm (0.827 in.) for the wire-to-board version. These waterproof connectors deliver a cost-effective solution by utilizing a copper alloy tin plated tab contact and a copper alloy tin plated receptacle contact. Contacts are rated at 6 Amps (AC/DC), 300 V AC/DC. Temperature range is -55 °C to +85 °C including temperature rise in applying electrical current. Applicable wires are AWG #18-22. Shrouded headers on the wire-to-board connector utilize a copper alloy tin plated contact and are only available in side entry.
