Safety shutdown time for motor drive applications is said to be cut in half with the introduction of the IR2172 linear current-sensing IC with built-in over-current shutdown. The chip eliminates external current sensing protection circuits and is rated at 600V, for 230V three-phase ac inverter or brushless dc industrial motor drives used in conveyor belts and similar applications.
The chip has a 1.5 µs over-current shutdown feature with a wired-OR connection capability directly to the microprocessor or digital signal processor. The IC comes in two industry-standard compact package sizes: SO-8 and 8-pin DIP. Pricing for the chip begins at $3.55 each/10,000.
