Motion-Control Card Communicates Via Ethernet

April 20, 2006
FiveCo Fmod-IPDCMOT combines a 32-bit motion controller with the speed of the Ethernet communication protocol to control DC brush motors.

The Fmod-IPDCMOT is a 48-V, 1.5-A motion-control card that uses the Ethernet bus to send both data and power at the same time over distances of up to several thousand yards. With its integrated http Web server, the Fmod-IPDCMOT offers a control solution that combines a 32-bit motion controller with the speed of the Ethernet communication protocol to control DC brush motors (10 to 48 V).

Ethernet communication allows the implementation of protocols (TCP-IP, http, etc.) already embedded in every operating system (MS Windows, MacOS, Unix, etc.). In addition, the module uses the latest IEEE 802.3af standard, which allows Fmod-IPDCMOT to be powered from an Ethernet cable (up to 15 W for card and motor). It can also be powered from an external supply in order to exploit the full potential of the card (70 W continuous and 140 W max)..

This card is based on an RISC CPU with 4 quadrants and 32-bit PID algorithms for position or speed control. The PID regulator has a sampling rate of 20 to 2000 Hz. Brushed DC motor position or speed can be controlled , as well as position with a trapezoidal speed profile. Available modes include: brake mode, free mode, open-loop mode, position control mode, speed control mode, and 10 different homing modes. Current limitation is automatic and configurable over TCP/IP to prevent motor overheating and wear.
