A tiny inductive encoder kit, the IT3401, is designed for linear and rotary applications. It measures 11 mm x 11 mm with a thickness of 0.9 mm, and provides A and B signals in quadrature and an Index signal as a mechanical reference. The linear/rotary targets are 0.6-mm thick strips or discs that come in different lengths or diameters. Linear resolution ranges from 0.3 µm at a speed of 0.5 m/s to 150 µm at 50 m/s. Rotational resolution depends on the disc diameter. An example resolution is 12 bits (1024 A-B pulses per revolution) with a 28-mm diameter disc. Typical applications are mechatronics and motion-control systems that use magnetic actuators like brushed and brushless motors, voice coil actuators, and linear drives. Target markets include medical, life science, robotics, laboratory automation, factory automation, and instrumentation. Evaluation encoder kits with linear or rotational targets are available now. Production starts in the fourth quarter of 2009. POSIC, Markham, Ontario, Canada. (416) 410-1599.
