ITT's Cannon PHD high-density optical interconnect systems are flexible, scalable, and easy to maintain. Based on an industry-standard 1.25-mm ceramic ferrule, the system enables a higher-density optical system than most traditional SC, ST, or MC ferrule technologies.

The optical core connector bodies and structured cable systems have been engineered to support mission-critical applications within data-carrying networks. The system's design minimizes the potential for operator error, simplifying field service and repair. Designers can expect stable performance for multichannel interconnects and reduced insertion loss, less channel-to-channel variance, and higher return loss. The product's end face is GR-326 compliant.

The company offers interconnect models for panel mounting, for use on backplanes and rack-and-panel designs, for interfacing with the standard MIL-C-38999 footprint, or for applications that require exposure to outdoor and factory environments. Target applications include telecommunications, automotive systems, commercial aircraft, data communications, industrial systems, and medical products.

NEWS IN BRIEF: OPTOELECTRONICS Laser Components IG s fiber-optic switches are based on a micro-mechanical/micro-optical design that delivers high flexibility, long-term stability, and excellent optical properties. The response times are less than 2 ms, and a lifetime of more than 108 switching cycles is guaranteed. The switches are offered in a standard SM version for 1260-1650 nm, a short wavelength version for 400-690 nm or 700-1100 nm, and a PM version for polarization-maintaining fibers. See www.laser-components.com for details.

Vishay Intertechnology has two new infrared transceivers that support the IrDA high-speed IrSimpleShot protocol for beaming digital pictures directly from camera phones to TVs, printers, and other enabled camera phones. The TFDU6300 and TFDU6301 provide the fast infrared (FIR) 4-Mbit/s data rate required by IrSimpleShot within a miniaturized package that fits into today s compact mobile phones, digital still cameras, and TVs. Both transceivers require minimal battery power, thanks to their low receive operating (or idle) current of 1.8 mA and shutdown current of 0.01 µA. Visit www.vishay.com for additional information.

A family of avalanche photodiodes (APDs) from DMG Technologies features 1.25- and 2.5-Gbit/s versions of the devices. Packaging configurations include pigtails, TO cans, and the industry-standard 14-pin butterfly format. These long-wavelength indium-gallium-arsenide (InGaAs) APDs operate over a wavelength range of 1250 to 1620 nm with a typical sensitivity of 34 dBm. They re available with an FC/PC, SC, ST, or LC connector and offer a selection of three different low-noise MMIC pre-amplifiers. To learn more, go to www.dmgtechusa.com.
