The TC6xx family of fan managers includes single and dual SMBus fan speed controllers with fan-fault and overtemperature detection capabilities. The TC654, TC655, TC664, and TC665 devices adjust fan speed according to temperature rather than continuously running a system's fan at maximum speed. The required fan speed can be programmed by the output of a remote thermistor or by SMBus communication-based commands. Integrating FanSense technology, the devices let designers use two-wire fans rather than more expensive three-wire versions. Thanks to the use of an external power device, the controllers drive 5-, 12-, 24-, and 48-V fans rated up to 1 A. The TC664 and TC665 target single-fan applications, and the TC654 and TC655 can monitor two fans simultaneously. The TC655 and TC665 also assert an overtemperature signal. Offered in 10-pin MSOP packages, the devices operate from 3.0 to 5.5 V from −40°C to 85°C. The TC654, TC655, TC664, and TC665 cost $1.70, $1.79, $1.51, and $1.59 each, respectively.
