Two brochures from Vishay Intertechnology describe the challenges inherent in current sensing and in medical and biotechnology applications, and explain how Vishay’s foil resistor technology provides a variety of solutions. The brochures are titled, “Ultra-High-Precision Current Sensing Bulk Metal Foil Resistors”and“Ultra-High-Precision Bulk Metal Foil Resistors for Advanced Medical Applications, Treatment Solutions, and Biotechnology.”

Dr. Zandman, the inventor of bulk metal foil resistors, has spearheaded ongoing improvements to the original design. One recent improvement to the bulk metal foil resistor product line, Z Foil, provides an absolute temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of only 0.2 ppm/°C.

The importance of TCR is discussed in great detail in Ultra-High-Precision Current Sensing Bulk Metal Foil Resistors. As the key parameter used to specify a resistor’s stability, TCR expresses the change in resistance due to a change in the ambient temperature. Current sensing resistor applications are further complicated by changes in resistance due to self-heating (Joule effect) during application of power. The brochure covers these and other issues in great detail, and discusses how Bulk Metal foil resistors can be used to overcome them.

Ultra-High-Precision Bulk Metal Foil Resistors for Advanced Medical Applications, Treatment Solutions, and Biotechnology explains why Bulk Metal foil resistors are the preferred resistors for medical applications including non-invasive equipment, imaging equipment and systems, and biological implants. The brochure lists the features of benefits of both surface-mount and through-hole foil Vishay resistors.

Both brochures are available on Vishay’s website and from the appropriate Vishay literature distribution center.
