Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. introduced a  AEC-Q200-qualified, 25 W thick film power resistor in a compact surface-mount TO-252 style (DPAK) package. For automotive, industrial, and military applications, the Vishay Sfernice DTO25 saves space compared with previous-generation solutions while providing high power dissipation of at least 3 W on the PCB and a wide range of resistance values.

The DTO25 is non-inductive and provides a resistance range from 0.016 W to 700 kW. Offering a compact 8.2 mm by 7.3 mm footprint with a low 2.8 mm profile, the thick film resistor can support more than 10 times more energy than competing components in the DPAK package - up to 5 kW+ for a 10-5 second pulse and 10 J for a 0.1 second pulse.

The device released today provides long-term reliability for power supply, load resistor, snubber, power conversion, and pre-charging and discharging in battery management systems for hybrid and electric cars, missile control boards, and UPS. In these applications it allows designers to replace several chip resistors with one device to lower costs, simplify layouts, and reduce the size of their end products.

Thermal resistance for the DTO25 at 25 W and +25 °C is 5 °C/W junction-to-case. The resistor features a standard temperature coefficient of ±150 ppm/°C with standard tolerances of ±1 % to ±10 %. Connections for the new resistor are tinned copper, and they are specified for operation over a -55 °C to +150 °C temperature range. The device is RoHS-compliant, offers a moisture sensitivity level of 1, and supports soldering temperatures at +270 °C for 10 seconds.

Samples and production quantities of the DTO25 are available now, with lead times of eight to 10 weeks for larger orders. Pricing for U.S. delivery starts at $1.80 per piece in 1,000-piece quantities.
