A new series of surface mount inductors is said to possess a robust design with reliable performance. To back up this claim the company puts its SMRF 1812 series through severe reliability testing including 200 cycles of thermal shock, 2,000 hours of life test (full load), 1,000 hours of 85/85 humidity with load, a drop test (1 meter, 10 times) and a shear test (4.4 lbs). Before testing, the inductors are preconditioned via four cycles of reflow soldering peaking at 250°C for 30 seconds, followed by one cycle of complete solder submersion at 245°C. Since they withstand these adverse conditions, the SMRF 1812 inductors function in conditions such as RF applications that subject inductors to harsh soldering processes. To minimize stress on internal component parts, the coil is centered within the device and is made from a high-temperature magnet wire. To further enhance product quality and reliability, a semiconductor grade epoxy molding compound is utilized. Applications for the SMRF 1812 include all RF signal circuitry in equipment for communications, test and measurement, medical diagnostics and industrial process control. The series has inductance ratings of 1.0 to 1,000 µH and current ratings from 450 to 30 mA. Pricing is less than $0.20 each in production quantities. GOWANDA ELECTRONICS, Gowanda, NY.
