Wide-side terminal construction yields a 2-W power rating in Vishay Intertechnology’s WSL1020 surface-mount Power Metal Strip resistor. Housed in a 0.200- by 0.100- by 0.025-mm 1020 case, the device combines high power-to-footprint size ratio with resistance values that range from 0.003 to 0.006 Ω, and stable resistance tolerances of 0.5%, 1%, and 5%. The solid metal nickel-chrome alloy resistive element incorporated with a TCR of less than 20 ppm/°C translates to an operating temperature range of −65 to +170°C while still maintaining the Power Metal Strip’s electrical characteristics. Inductance spans from 0.5 to 5 nH, response is to 50 MHz, and thermal EMF measures less than 3 µV/°C. Current-sensing and pulse applications include switching and linear power supplies, instruments, power amplifiers, and shunts in automotive electronic controls (e.g., engine, brushless dc motors, battery management); industrial controls (e.g., down-hole test-and-measurement equipment for oil/gas well drilling); inverter controls for HVAC systems; and dc-dc converters.
