An InfiniBand system device known as the LU6X14FT comprises four 3.125-Gbit/s serializer/deserializer (SERDES) channels on a single chip. The four channels can be aggregated to handle data rates of up to 12.5 Gbits/s.

This chip consumes about 225 mW/channel, or 900 mW for four channels. According to its manufacturer, that's about two-thirds lower than its competitors. It also exhibits extremely low jitter while covering data rates from 1.0625 to 3.125 Gbits/s. Tooled in 1.5-V CMOS, this mixed-signal device will be built though a 0.13-µm process. Additionally, this chip will be supplied as both a standalone component and as part of a customized and integrated system solution.

Mounted in a 208-lead PBGA package, the LU6X14FT will cost about $95 each in 10,000-unit quantities. Sample quantities will be available in January.
