The RPU110-L200, a reconfigurable processor unit, employs what reportedly is the largest FPGA available to deliver the greatest usable logic capacity and accelerated performance for compute-intensive applications. A modular unit, the RPU110–L200 plugs directly into an open processor socket in a multi-way AMD Opteron system to provide direct access to adjacent DDR memory and processors at HyperTransport speed and nano-second latency. This coupling between the CPU and memory allegedly eliminates bandwidth and latency issues and provides a general-purpose system with supercomputer capabilities. Resulting speeds can be 10 to 20 times faster than if the subroutines were run in software. Additionally, the unit requires little power and space, and reduces the number of required nodes.
