Supplanting traditional modems associated with Internet-appliance applications, the self-contained iModem (CH2165) module measures about 2.5 square inches and is said to be easily embedded into a PCB design. The module allows internet-enabled machines to send and receive streaming e-mail of unlimited length or to send pre-stored messages up to 1 MB in size. Its resident SMTP/TCP and POP3 retrieval lets the module seamlessly access any ISP using a local access number. According to the company, conventional modems and their private networks need long distance access while iModems just require the aforementioned local access. Therefore, iModems have a fixed monthly charge as low as $2. A free software program, iNetWizard, walks users through the set up sequence and includes a three-month trial subscription to the company's imodem.net ISP.
