Tasking VX-toolset from Altium replaces Atera’s standard GNU C compiler.

The Tasking VX-toolset for Altera Corp.’s Nios II family of embedded processors operates seamlessly within the Nios II integrated development environment (IDE) and acts as a "drop-in" replacement for Altera’s standard GNU C compiler (GCC). Initial benchmarking of the Tasking VX-toolset for the Nios II family shows performance advantages of up to a 40% increase in code execution speed and a 20% decrease in memory footprint over the GCC compiler, according to Altium Limited.

The Tasking VX-toolset also allows an easy migration path to Altium Designer, which includes full design support for Nios II-based systems. Direct C code-level compatibility with Altium Designer enables developers to transition projects and take advantage of a unified hardware/software co-design environment. This includes FPGA-based virtual instruments for interactive hardware/software debugging—what Altium calls LiveDesign—to accelerate system development. So designers can develop more intelligent products faster by fully using the potential of high-capacity FPGA devices as a "soft" system development platform. They can then synchronize the design of the physical platform with the "embedded intelligence" that resides on the programmable devices, including FPGAs and processors.
