The latest version of the 54g WLAN reference design pairs an SE2528L power amplifier from SiGe Semiconductor with the company's BCM4318E 802.11g transceiver with BroadRange technology, which extends the range of 54g-based devices up to 50%. Users can directly interface the transceiver with the power amplifier to further expand wireless coverage. The SE2528L features an output power of +19 dBm at the antenna when operating in 802.11g mode with an error vector magnitude of less than 3%. Based on an advanced silicon-germanium architecture, it is characterized for both 3.3V and 5V operation and includes a power-enable switch, bias-control circuitry, and a power detector. A third-generation device, the BCM4318E transceiver consumes as little as 9 mW of power in idle mode. The reference design includes all the necessary hardware and software to build a 54g system.
