The Nucleus kernel comes in three forms, including one that's compatible with the Japan Itron standard and another with the auto industry OSEK standard. These are based on the main Nucleus kernel.

Although Nucleus handles a number of 8- and 16-bit platforms, this is clearly an RTOS that comes into full form when run on higher-end 32- and 64-bit platforms. Its source-code availability and royalty-free status will appeal to most developers.

The majority of Nucleus is written in C, but there's an alternate C++ object-oriented application programming interface (API). Object support is available for network and file services in addition to base RTOS services. The Nucleus C++ MNT component prototyping system works with Microsoft's Visual C++ and Visual Studio.

Nucleus is very flexible. Service usage can be handled on either a first-in-first-out (FIFO) or a task-priority basis.

The Nucleus kernel can be surrounded by a broad range of services from graphical interfaces like Nucleus GRAPHIX with Visual Studio integration to embedded Java support, which includes Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) embedded standards. Two examples are the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP).

Nucleus offers a wide range of optional modules. Its Residential Gateway suite builds on its TCP/IP capabilities. Nucleus also provides NAT and DHCP server features. Its TLS module supplies secure socket-layer (SSL) support. Add in code|lab for top-notch embedded development environments.
