The latest release of Hewlett-Packard's Chai Application Platform represents a significant upgrade of the Chai Java environment. Its three updated components include ChaiVM 5.0, Chai Server 3.0, and ChaiFarer 2.0. Compatible with but independent of Sun's embedded Java implementation, the platform includes a complete set of development tools as well as a Java Virtual Machine. It runs on a variety of platforms, including Linux, a new addition.
ChaiVM now supports third-party integrated development environments (IDEs), so it's easier to use third-party Java development tools for Chai-based application development. The other major addition in ChaiVM 5.0 is ChaiFreezeDry. This technology, which includes a new Java-class loader, reduces the size of Java-class files by eliminating redundant information. It also shrinks Java application footprints by a factor of two to ten.
Chai Server is a small, 200-kbyte Java-based Web server that includes remote administration support. Hewlett-Packard has made it easier to develop new ChaiServices that run on this server, too. For example, the ChaiServiceWizard is a plug-in wizard for Microsoft's Visual J++ development environment. Chai-Mail support has been added as well.
ChaiFarer is a 22-kbyte, scalable, XML-capable Web browser. Its latest edition adds JavaScript support, filling a major gap. This ChaiFarer version also includes SSL support that's critical for secure communications.
