Using perpendicular magnetic recording, the MK1011GAH propels the 1.8" hard-disk drive form factor to a 100-GB capacity. Designed in the “short” 1.8" form factor, the two-platter device’s footprint is 10% smaller than first-generation HDDs. With an areal density of 155.3 Gb/in.2, the drive is specially designed for thin and light mobile computers with an 8-MB cache. The HDD integrates a low-insertion-force connector, providing a format that enables mobile PC manufacturers to easily transition to higher capacities in smaller-footprint HDDs. In addition to perpendicular recording, the HDD uses the same tunnel magneto-resistive (TMR) head technology that created the company’s 200-GB 2.5" HDD with an areal density of 178.8 Gb/in.2. The MK1011GAH complies with the RoHS directive. Shipments to OEMs for integration into mobile PCs will begin in January, 2007. TOSHIBA STORAGE DEVICE DIV., Irvine, CA. (949) 583-3000.
