Low-Energy Bluetooth Smart Modules Suit Medical Devices

April 18, 2013
Bluetooth smart modules support ultra-low power saving modes to achieve as little as 1,000 nA of power consumption in deep sleep mode and 10.5 mA when transmitting 0 dBm.

When utilizing BL600 Bluetooth smart modules from Laird, medical devices that send small amounts of data wirelessly are estimated to run for months or even years on a coin cell battery. The dime-sized (19 x 12.5 mm) modules are suited for a range of applications including in-home medical devices, battery-powered sensors, data collection devices, and health and fitness equipment. The company’s event-driven programming language, smartBASIC, is designed to simplify BLE module integration to the point where even those with little software or Bluetooth expertise can develop fully functional applications. These applications, along with a complete BLE stack, reside on the module itself, not requiring additional external devices. The modules support a variety of ultra-low power saving modes to achieve as little as 1,000 nA of power consumption in deep sleep mode and 10.5 mA when transmitting data at 0 dBm. Each module version contains an integrated antenna, an IPEX MHF4 antenna connector, or trade pads for an external antenna. Carrying FCC modular, IC, MIC and CE approvals, BL600 Bluetooth smart modules are in mass production with development kits also available.
