SMARC Computer-On-Module Eyes Small-Form-Factor Embedded, Mobile Systems

Jan. 17, 2014
The LEC-3517 Smart Mobility Architecture (SMARC) form-factor computer-on-module (COM), built on a Texas Instruments AM3517 system-on-a-chip, integrates a 600-MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor and features a power envelope of less than 2 W.

As a result, system architects can use a fully passive cooled system design that suits portable and stationary embedded devices, such as industrial handhelds, control terminals, human machine interfaces, medical devices, and industrial tablets. Developed by ADLINK, the 82- by 50-mm module offers 256 Mbytes of DRAM and 512 Mbytes of NAND flash onboard. It supports 18/24-bit parallel LCD displays and 8-bit camera input. Other features are a USB 2.0 host port, USB client port, four serial ports, and CAN bus port, one 10/100 Ethernet port, and 12 GPIO signals. Off-module storage can be implemented through either SDIO or eMMC on the carrier. Standard operating systems include Linux, Android, and Windows CE. The company also offers the LEC-BASE SMARC carrier board, which functions as a reference design for the LEC line and as a setup for software development and hardware testing.
