VPX SBC Ushers In Low-Power ARM Processing To COTS Market

Featuring dual 1-GHz ARM processors, the VPX3-1701 3U VPX single board computer (SBC) offers a low-power COTS option—it’s rated at less than 15 W maximum power dissipation. An integral high-speed backplane on the board, developed by Curtiss-Wright Corp.’s Defense Solutions division, along with XMC connectivity enable multi-gigabit-per-second data flows from board-to-board through the backplane interface, and from the backplane to its on-board XMC site. Thus, it supports the acquisition, processing, and distribution of sensor data for C4ISR applications, such as video, radar, and sonar data processing. The ARM Cortex A7 processors comes with ECC-protected L1/L2 caches. The SBC integrates 2 Gbytes of DDR3 SDRAM with ECC, 16 Gbytes of flash, and 512 kbytes of nonvolatile memory. I/O includes two 10/100/100 Ethernet ports, four asynchronous serial channels (two EI-232 and two EI-422), up to two USB host ports, and one SATA interface. The VPX3-1701 is pin-compatible with other Curtiss-Wright 3U VPX SBCs (e.g., VPX3-131, VPX3-133, and VPX3-1257). Models come in air-cooled and conduction-cooled versions.
