Flash-Based FPGA Module Enhances Re-Programmable Logic

Offered as an alternative to one-time programmable PROMs for achieving multiple FPGA configurations, the Configurator integrates a microcontroller and flash memory to configure up to eight FPGAs in parallel. The module is said to be able to handle even the largest Virtex parts, supporting all 3K, 4K, Spartan and Virtex parts with 8-, 16-and 32-Mb models available. It is programmable in-system using a Windows application program communicating over a 115-kb/s serial port connection. Re-configurable logic applications can use the device to store up to eight different configurations for up to eight FPGAs. Individual Configurator modules cost from $149 to $199 each/50 depending on flash size, and micro-controllers cost $39 each/100. A starter kit, which comes with everything needed to get started including a Configurator module, serial interface cable, sample schematics, and a Windows graphical user interface, is priced at $459.
