Measuring just 4 mm x 4 mm with a height of 0.8 mm, the HSDL-7002 SIR emerges as the industry's smallest encoder-decoder chip for applications requiring serial infrared connectivity. The device is available in a 16-pin QFN package and exhibits the same performance levels as its larger predecessor, the HSDL-7001 SIR. Providing a direct interface between the transceiver and a 16550 UART, the chip complies with the IrDA Physical Layer 1.4, low-power specification from 9.6 to 115.2 Kb/s. In transmit mode, it shortens the UART/RS-232 output to IrDA-compatible pulses of 1.6 µs and, in receive mode, stretches IR pulses to bit widths appropriate to the operating bit rate. Additionally, the device operates from a 2.7V to 5.5V supply and uses either an internal or external 3.6864-MHz clock. Price is $1.30/50,000. AGILENT TECHNOLOGIES INC., Palo Alto, CA.
