The AS5046, a 12-bit magnetic rotary encoder, offers rotation, tilt, and vertical distance detection of a magnet moving above it. The device can detect vertical distances over several millimeters, making it desirable for use in contactless, multi-axis human interface devices. Essentially a complete system on chip, it combines both Hall-elements and a signal processor on one device. In addition to rotation detection mode, the AS5046 also detects magnet tilt with push-button functionality. Communication with an external microcontroller is via a 2-wire serial interface. For standalone operation, the encoder provides a programmable ratiometric analog output. Other features include 3.3V or 5V operation and an operating temperature range from -40°C to +125°C ambient AUSTRIAMICROSYSTEMS USA INC., Raleigh, NC. (919) 676-5292.
