Sampling now, the TMS320C6424 and TMS320C6421 DSPs promise to lower per-channel costs for converged voice, video, and data topologies in Telecom IP-PBX, VoIP media gateway, and VoIP router products. The devices are upward code-compatible with existing TMS320C6000 DSPs and can be programmed via eXpress software, which supports open-source and third party software. Based on the TMS320C64x+ DSP core, the performance of the C6424 DSP and C6421 DSP peaks at 4,800 MMACs at 600 MHz. I/O capabilities are enhanced via EDMA 3.0 with its 4.8 GB/s throughput and a 333-MHz DDR2 memory interface. Additionally, a C6424 DSP evaluation module and development tools support the chips. Both DSPs are available in speeds of 400 MHz, 500 MHz, and 600 MHz and in two sizes, 16 mm x 16 mm and 23 mm x 23 mm BGA packages with 0.8-mm and 1-mm pitches, respectively. With production set for the fourth quarter, prices range from $8.95 to $24.95 each. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (800) 477-8924.
