The application potential at both ends of the product spectrum of the popular TMS320C54x generation of digital signal processors (DSPs) has been significantly extended with the addition of two new chips. The TMS320C5420 is said to be the most highly integrated fixed-point DSP on the market, while at the other end of the family's product spectrum comes the TMS320C5402, reportedly the most cost-effective, general-purpose solution available today for single-channel, end-user terminal systems like wireless modems, PDAs, Ethernet phones, and other telephony applications.Packed into 'C5420's tiny, 12 x 12 x 1.4 mm microStar BGA are two DSP cores capable of processing 200 MIPS 200K words of on-chip SRAM, and an extensive complement of peripheral capabilities, including six serial ports, a DMA controller, and a 16-bit host port interface (HPI). In addition, the power stingy 'C5420 consumes as little as 0.32 mW/MIPS, or
