MCU Vies For Next-Generation Handheld Multimedia Applications

Dec. 1, 2000

Designed for a wide range of portable, multimedia applications, the E1-32XS 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) features a RISC architecture with integrated DSP support. Running at 180 MHz, communication between RISC and DSP units is via an internal 96-way, 32-bit register set.
Power efficiency is 3.6 GOPS/W, achieved through the parallel operation of three functional blocks of the integrated core: RISC ALU, DSP unit, and the load/store unit. This integrated architecture allows instructions to be streamed through all three units simultaneously to deliver a peak performance of 720 MOPS. Other features include low power consumption, fast interrupt response, on-chip DRAM controller, on-chip hardware timer. 2.5V to 3.3V operation, and a temperature range from -40°C to 85°C. Available in a 144-pin LQFP, price is under $8 each in volume.
