Accepting the challenges facing wireless infrastructure equipment providers, the 1-GHz TMS32OTCI6482 digital-signal processor is capable of handling multiple 3G-interface standards and a range of base station form factors on a single chip. Said to perform at nearly twice the clock speed of comparable DSPs, the 1-GHz device consumes only 3W of power. It offers several added features not found in previous TMS32OC64x devices. These include 28 new instructions that allow upgrading a system with features such as High Speed Download Packet Access (HSDPA). Other features include enhanced co-processors for Viterbi and Turbo decoding and a serial Rapid I/0 interconnect. Additionally, a single TC16482 can support a multi-antenna system providing 11.5 MB/s of data bandwidth to users over a 5-Mhz channel via software only. Sampling now, volume production of the TMS32OTCI6482 is slated for early next year. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (800) 477-8924.
