MCU Simultaneously Controls Two Motors

Feb. 26, 2014
High-accuracy sensored and sensorless motor control from NXP’s LPC1500 microcontroller (MCU) series enables simultaneous control of two motors in highly flexible configurations.

High-accuracy sensored and sensorless motor control from NXP’s LPC1500 microcontroller (MCU) series enables simultaneous control of two motors in highly flexible configurations. Based on a 72-MHz ARM Cortex-M3 processor, the MCUs feature two 12-bit, 12-channel, 2-Msample/s analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and an on-chip quadrature encoder interface (QEI). Thanks to four on-chip comparators, the devices possess fast-response overcurrent/overvoltage monitoring and protection. Four flexible SCTimer/PWM timers offer up to 28 pulse-width-modulation (PWM) channels in a tightly coupled analog and timing subsystem. Also available are two motor-control kits (including baseboards, motors, and free firmware): the PMSM Motor Control Solution, which demonstrates motor control for sensored and sensorless permanent-magnet (PM) motors; and the BLDC Motor Control Solution, which demonstrates classical trapezoidal motor-control functionality on a sensored brushless dc (BLDC) motor. In addition to PM synchronous motors and BLDC motors, the LPC1500s will find homes in ac induction motors (ACIMs) found in large home appliances, HVAC, industrial pumps and generators, etc.
