Targeting ultra-low-power applications, Texas Instruments’ RF430F5978 microcontroller (MCU) features enhanced read zone and battery performance. The device incorporates a 3D low-frequency (LF) wakeup and transponder interface that reduces power consumption by allowing shutdown of the RF radio and quick startup of the LF wakeup function, leading to longer battery life. The 3D LF transponder, which can function without a battery supply, tracks position and distance within 5 cm using return signal strength indicator (RSSI) within a 4-meter radius of a reader LF trigger. Its 128-bit AES security encryption/decryption coprocessor adds advanced security for data protection. In addition, an integrated sub-1-GHz RF transceiver accommodates 300- to 950-MHz frequencies. The MCU’s programmable MSP430 core provides flexible customization at ultra-low power. To evaluate the MCU system, TI also introduced the RF430F5978EVM evaluation module. It includes a USB plug-in LF trigger module, RF430F5978 MCU evaluation board, AP434R01 access point, and 3D LF antenna.
