MEMS Scanners Target Augmented-Reality Glasses

Sept. 22, 2021
OQmented has developed a tiny, single-chip, MEMS mirror-based laser-beam scanning solution.

OQmented's one-chip MEMS mirror-based laser-beam scanning (LBS) solution targets lightweight augmented/virtual-reality (AR/VR) smart glasses. The chip is hidden in the frame of the glasses and uses lens as a presentation platform that the user can see.

One aspect of the system is a hermatically sealed, MEMS mirror system (Fig. 1). This is integrated with the logic that improves performance and reduces power requirements.

The protective vacuum environment is built using OQmented's Bubble MEMS technology that has a hemispherical cover. A flat glass solution would actually require more surface area for a comparable field of view (FOV).

“We set out to eliminate the barriers that forced developers of smart glasses to sacrifice lightweight and stylish for powerful visualization capabilities. Now, building on decades of research, we are proud to deliver with a one-of-a-kind LBS projection display,” said Ulrich Hofmann, Co-CEO and CTO at OQmented. “With its technical and cost advantages, our solution gives new stretch to product design imagination for Big Tech companies. We are excited to support these innovators with a technology that will help them create bold new product categories.”
