NXP's MCX portfolio of scalable, secure, and developer-focused microcontrollers (MCUs) is purpose-built to support Industrial and IoT use cases, offering expanded capabilities like memory scalability. The Arm Cortex-M based MCX portfolio offers functionality and intelligent peripherals for intelligent edge applications like machine learning, wireless devices, voice recognition, motor control, and others.
Features include the company's new specialized neural processing unit (NPU) for accelerating inference at the edge, which delivers up to 30x faster machine learning throughput when compared to a CPU core by itself.
The MCX MCU portfolio features four new series of devices supported by NXP’s widely adopted MCUXpresso suite of software and development tools. The MCX N Advanced series is designed for secure, intelligent applications, available with an integrated EdgeLock secure subsystem and dedicated NPU incorporating a high-efficiency compute architecture for real-time inference. The MCX A Essential series is optimized for a broad range of applications where cost and time-to-market are key.
The MCX W Wireless series offers low-power narrowband connectivity, including Bluetooth Low Energy, with an energy-efficient radio to help extend battery life. And the MCX L Ultra-Low Power series, designed for power-critical applications, can help extend battery life significantly compared to legacy MCUs.
Machine learning (ML) and run-time inference will be supported by NXP’s eIQ ML software environment, with tools to train ML models targeting either the NPU or the CPU core, to deploy on the MCU. MCX families built with NXP’s security-by-design approach will have a secure boot with root-of-trust, hardware-accelerated cryptography. Select families will have a built-in EdgeLock secure subsystem.
