The GammaChrome high-performance 3D graphics accelerators from S3 Graphics incorporate a 16-channel native PCI-Express host interface that delivers an aggregate data transfer rate of 8 Gbytes/s between the host system and the graphics processor.

These processors include hardware acceleration for Microsoft DirectX 9 shaders. They also incorporate S3 Graphics' Hi-Def display capability for high-definition video encoding that supports all 18 ATSC DTV and SDTV standards and the Cromotion2 programmable video engine, which is fully compatible with Microsoft's DirectX-VA media acceleration software.

The Cromotion2 provides programmable video effects that can be applied to almost all video codecs and applications, such as WMV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and DIVIX. Additionally, the pixel pipeline on the chip provides full floating-point precision for single-clock execution of high-precision pixel shader 2.0 operation on a complete deep color pixel per pipeline.

The Hi-Def HDTV and standard TV encoder handles all ATSC standards and supports the 1080p mode for high-end displays. DVI displays with resolutions of up to 1600 by 1200 pixels are possible. A 128-bit wide double-data-rate (DDR) memory interface supports frame buffers of up to 256 Mbytes.

Samples of the GammaChrome chip are now available. Boards based on the chip are expected to be available in the third quarter. For volume pricing, contact S3 Graphics.
