The company has developed what it calls the first double-sided LCD panel that can produce independent images or sets of visual data simultaneously on the front and back of the same screen. Reportedly, conventional double-sided LCDs can only show a reverse image of the same video data. The LCD exploits the company’s double-gate TFT architecture, whereby it employs two gates that operate each pixel instead of one. It also employs proprietary amorphous silicon gate technology, which accommodates the increased number of TFT gates without increasing the size of the driver ICs. Saving more space, the display requires only one backlight. The double-sided LCD measures 2.6-mm thick and 2.22" wide and delivers QVGA resolution. Brightness values are 250 nits for the front and 100 nits for the rear display. Mass production of the new display is set for the first half of 2007. SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO. LTD., San Jose, CA.
