Smart Mobile Luminance Control (SMLC), a low-power backlight control algorithm for LCD driver chips, promises to reduce the luminance of LCD backlights by up to 50%. The unique technology analyzes image data within driver chips and adjusts their power consumption rates. Simultaneously, SMLC optimizes luminance by minimizing image distortion through an adaptive image signal processor. According to the company, LCD drivers employing SMLC could realize a 50% decrease in power consumption depending on the display technology and size. The algorithm offers four motion modes: user-setting, user-interface, still-image, and moving-picture modes. All four allow users to select optimal power saving rates based on individual preferences. Additionally, SMLC technology supports variable backlight-signal adjustment, i.e., PWM plus digital serial and parallel signals.
