White LED Backlighting In LCD Modules Eliminates Inverters

Oct. 18, 2007
The NL6448BC20-21C and NL6448BC20-21D from NEC LCD Technologies feature 6.5-in. VGA displays in a lightweight package that's shock- and vibration-resistant.

By using white LEDs for backlighting instead of the more traditional cold-cathode fluorescent lamps, two amorphous-silicon thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD modules eliminate the need for an inverter circuit. As a result, the 6.5-in. VGA-resolution modules from NEC LCD Technologies achieve low power consumption in a slim, lightweight package that is highly resistant to shock and vibration, suiting them well for portable displays in industrial applications. Eliminating the need for an inverter also reduces the modules' high-frequency noise and harmonic current. The modules are mercury-free, making them more environmentally friendly as well.

The NL6448BC20-21D version has a brightness rated at 550 cd/m2. The NL6448BC20-21C version incorporates the company's proprietary super-transmissive natural light TFT (ST-NLT) technology. Its brightness is rated at 800 cd/m2, and it can display vivid colors in environments with high ambient light, resulting in high reliability and excellent visibility in a variety of viewing conditions.
