Low power consumption and weight, thin shapes, and reliable operation are among the features helping spearhead the rapid growth in demand for full-color, full-motion outdoor and indoor signs based on LEDs such as this new family of 5-mm red, green, blue and amber lamps. Other features of the new LEDs expected to help them gain wide acceptance among large sign and display OEMs include an oval-shaped radiation pattern (35° x 70°) and high luminous intensity that help deliver very smooth, matched radiation patterns, thereby ensuring consistent color mixing in full-color applications and message uniformity across the sign's viewing angle. The LEDs are also said to be packaged in an advanced, optical-grade epoxy material that offers excellent high-temperature and high-moisture resistance in outdoor applications. Lamps with parallel or perpendicular orientation and with or without standoffs also are available. Red and amber LEDs are made of AlInGaP and blue and green devices, InGaN.
