Cupertino, CA-A research collaboration agreement between the Singapore Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) and the Semiconductor Group of Siemens AG has been signed that will allow the companies to jointly develop organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology on flexible substrates for commercial applications. In this collaborative effort, IMRE will contribute equipment and expertise for R&D in OLED for displays made of flexible materials. Siemens will provide its experience gained through OLED development on glass, as well as undertake commercialization of products resulting from the collaboration. OLED technology is especially well-suited for displays in cellular smart phones, personal organizers, small pagers, touch screens, multimedia, virtual reality, and information kiosks. OLED displays consist of several very thin organic layers sandwiched between two electrodes, making possible a roll-up TV screen in five to 10 years.
