Challenging electromagnetic conical piston speaker designs, the company's second generation, distributed mode actuator (DMA) allows the use of flat speakers in portable products. The latest transducers are more than 20% smaller than the first generation units and are said to be up to 10 times more efficient than conventional loud- speakers. In contrast to their first generation 34 mm x 5 mm x 4 mm counterparts, second generation DMAs measure 22 mm x 7 mm x 3.5 mm. They serve as a direct replacement for a micro speaker or as the basis for a unique application. The DMA consists of one or more small piezo beams, connected at a common stub that is mounted onto the underside of the lens or display. The drive is inertial, an approach that yields higher efficiencies and lower power consumption. Depending on design, application, and quantity, price ranges from $0.50 to $1.50 each.
