Groomed for next-generation Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) set-top boxes, the SMP8654 media processor system-on-chip promises a 50% improvement in performance over previous offerings along with lower system costs. The processor integrates a comprehensive array of capabilities including multimedia processing, a content security system, multiple on-chip CPUs, and system peripherals. It may also reduce sub-system costs by about 30% when compared to its predecessor, the SMP8634. Integrated decoder engines with high-definition video capabilities include H.264 (MPEG-4 part 10), Windows Media Video 9, VC-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (part 2), and the latest AVS standard. Graphics acceleration, multi-standard audio decoding, display processing capabilities, and an HDMI 1.3 output round out the chip's multimedia core. Samples of the SMP8654 are available now.
