LED Platform Offers Multiple Solutions For Auto Markets

July 15, 2010
Auto LEDs offer advantages over conventional lighting solutions in the form of major energy savings, reflected in lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions.

Promising to enhance automobile control, safety, and appearance and improve illumination and sensor functions, the company’s LEDs allegedly offer advantages over conventional lighting solutions in the form of major energy savings, reflected in lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. Reportedly, they will also outlast the vehicle itself in most cases, effectively eliminating lamp replacements and reducing potential warranty costs. The OSTAR Headlamp is available as a product platform with up to five LED chips. Providing a seamless white color impression at maximum brightness levels and depending on the variant and operating current, values between 125 lm and 1000 lm are achievable. With its scalable brightness and myriad of configuration options, the headlamp offers limitless styling options and is suitable for use in all headlamp functions including low and high beams, fog-lamps and daytime running lights, plus motorway beams and cornering lights. Other features include a power draw of 5W, an operating current of 1.4A, a typical brightness of 300 lm, and a heat-removal rate of 6 K/W. In addition to the OSTAR line of products, the OSLON SX ECE and MX ECE are available as complimentary forward lighting products. They offer a complete range of outputs from 20 lm to 1,000 lm and provide the same color binning. Also on tap is the IR OSTAR Observation family of infrared LED emitters (850 nm), said to be the most powerful infrared LED arrays in the world. Designed for use in night vision equipment and CCTV apps, they deliver a wavelength specially adapted to CMOS/CCD camera systems. They can be used with cameras in the vehicle to aid in functions such as pedestrian protection, night vision systems, lane departure warning systems, and in detecting objects in the rear of the vehicle. The IR LEDs can also be used inside the vehicle for features such as drowsy-driver sensing and out-of-position sensing for air bag deployment. Available as compact, multi-chip arrays, they are certified for automotive apps at temperatures up to +125°C. OSRAM OPTO SEMICONDUCTORS, San Jose, CA. (888) 446-7726.
