According to Texas Instruments, its Smart Data Concentrator evaluation module (EVM) adds greater flexibility and scalability into data-concentrator designs, enabling smart-grid developers to adapt to many worldwide standards. Accompanying the TMDSDC3359 EVM is a power-line-communication (PLC) system-on-module and supporting software. The SOMPLC-F28PLC83 system-on-module includes TI’s C2000 Piccolo microcontroller and AFE031 analog front end for G3, PRIME, and S-FSK support. The AFE031 for power metering works with a C2000 MCU, creating a complete two-chip PLC solution. Adding the system-on-module plus TI’s PLC software stacks allows developers to set up a data-concentrator demo with PLC connectivity in approximately 10 minutes. The EVM integrates the company’s Sitara AM3359 processor, which provides the performance headroom for the data connector’s complex routing algorithm to connect with more than 2000 e-meters. Available interfaces include two Ethernet (MAC) ports, USB, and up to eight UARTs.
